The 2015 Tannenwald Writing Competition

Sponsored by the Theodore Tannenwald, Jr. Foundation for Excellence in Tax Scholarship and The American College of Tax Counsel.

Named for the late Tax Court Judge Theodore Tannenwald, Jr., and designed to perpetuate his dedication to legal scholarship of the highest quality, the Tannenwald Writing Competition is open to all full- or part-time law school students, undergraduate or graduate.  Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic may be submitted in accordance with the Competition Rules (viewable at http://www.tannenwald.org).

Cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500 for the top three papers.

Deadline for submitting papers:  9:00 p.m. EDT, July 1, 2015.

Elliot A. Spoon Business Law Writing Competition

The Elliot A. Spoon Business Law Writing Competition is an annual writing competition sponsored by the Michigan State Journal of Business and Securities Law.

The Competition is named in honor of Elliot A. Spoon, dean of the Career Services office, our faculty advisor, a law school professor, and long-time advocate of The Michigan State Journal of Business and Security Law.

The Competition is designed to encourage business law scholarship by upper-level law students nationwide. The winner will receive an honorarium contingent on receipt of a signed publication contract for inclusion within our annual spring issue.

Submission Procedure:

If you are a law student at an ABA accredited law school, then submit:

(1) An electronic copy of your article, either as a pdf or as a Word document;

(2) A brief abstract of your article; and

(3) Your curriculum vitae (CV) with complete contact information.

Deadline: February 20, 2015

17th Annual Health Law Writing Competition

Epstein Becker Green is pleased to announce its 17th Annual Health Law Writing Competition. The competition is designed to encourage the preparation of scholarly papers on current topics of interest relating to health law. Cash prizes will be awarded as follows for the three best papers:

• First Place: $4,000
• Second Place: $2,000
• Third Place: $500

Entrants should take advantage of the fact that health law is a very broad and diverse field, encompassing aspects of almost every area of law. Papers may address any traditional area of the law as applied to health care (e.g., antitrust, tax, corporate) or areas of law unique to health care (e.g., fraud and abuse, managed care, Medicare/Medicaid, clinical trials). Entries in the top 20 percent will be considered for publication in the Annals of Health Law, which is published by the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
The submission period for the 17th Annual Health Law Writing Competition will open in December 2014. Papers will be due in January 2015.

Law Student Writing Competition

The ABA Forum on Construction Law

The deadline for the writing submission is January 15, 2015.

The ABA Forum on Construction Law is accepting articles for its Law Student Writing Competition. 
This competition is open to all law students in good standing and attending an ABA-accredited law school during 2014. Students may submit articles on a wide array of topics related to construction law. Articles should reflect the style of articles published in either the forum’s The Construction Lawyer magazine or the Under Construction newsletter.


The forum has presented these awards annually since 2010. Senior ABA Forum on Construction Law members will judge the submissions, which will be selected based on creativity, clarity and precision of writing, strength of argument, novelty and timeliness of subject, and quality of research. Winners will receive $2,000, travel expenses and registration for the forum’s 2015 Annual Meeting, plaque, a one-year membership in the forum and recognition in the forum’s newsletter, Under Construction and on the website; in addition to the opportunity to be published in one of the forum’s two publications, Under Construction or The Construction Lawyer. Other finalists will be recognized with a plaque and in forum publications. Winners will be announced and notified in March.  Forum Chair Steven Lesser will present the awards at its 2015 Annual Meeting, April 16-18 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Ohio Environmental Law Award:

Call for Papers

The Ohio State Bar Association Environmental Law Committee is seeking papers that advance the application and practice of environmental, energy or resources law in the State of Ohio. The winner of this contest will receive the "OSBA Environmental Law Award" and a prize of $1,000, donated by McMahon DeGulis LLP.

Winners will be announced at the Annual OSBA Environment, Energy and Resources Law Seminar in April 2014 and will be published in the seminar materials.

The submission deadline is Jan. 30, 2015 at 5 p.m. EST.

2015 Submission Guidelines 

Topic:Any topic that advances the application and practice of environmental, energy or resources law in the State of Ohio. 

Eligibility:You are eligible to enter the OSBA Environmental Law Call for Papers if you are currently enrolled in law school. The submission must be the student's original, unpublished and uncopyrighted work. The paper may be prepared to satisfy a course requirement or for other academic credit. However, the paper must be the work of the submitting student without substantial editorial input from others. Only one paper may be submitted per entrant.

Prize:The winner of this contest will receive a prize of $1000. The OSBA Environmental Law Call for Papers requires that there be only one winner. Joint submissions are not permitted. 

Submissions:Submissions may be of any length up to a maximum of 50 pages, in a double-spaced, 8.5 x 11-inch page format with 12-point font (10-point for footnotes). All entries must be submitted electronically to envlaw@mdllp.net. You will receive a confirmation by e-mail. The subject line should be "Response to Call for Papers" and the paper and cover page should be separate attachments. 

Each submission should include a SEPARATE COVER PAGE with the entrant's name, law school, year of study, mailing and email address, and phone number. The contestant's name and other identifying markings, such as school name, may not appear on any copy of the submitted essay. The cover page should also include an abstract of not more than 250 words and certification that the article has not been published or is not slated to be published elsewhere. This certification grants McMahon DeGulis LLP and the OSBA the non-exclusive license to publication.

Selection:Submitted articles will be judged on the following criteria: relevance to the practice of law in Ohio, timeliness and importance of selected topic; organization; quality of legal analysis; quality of legal research; and quality of the overall writing. In the event of a tie, the first tiebreaker will be the score for relevance to the practice of law in Ohio. The winning paper is expected to be of law review quality or better.

WHAT: The GRAMMY Foundation^® has launched its 17th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative^®

Writing Competition, co-sponsored by the American Bar Association. The ELI Writing Competition invites law students to write a 3,000-word paper on a compelling legal topic facing the music industry today. To encourage applications, the GRAMMY Foundation hosts ELI Writing Competition workshops at prominent law schools around the country with the goal of helping students with their essays. A cash scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded to the author of the winning paper and $1,500 will be awarded to each of four runners-up. Additionally, each winner will receive airfare, hotel accommodations and a ticket to the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards^®, which will be held at STAPLES Center on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015. The telecast will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The 2015 Constance Baker Motley National Student Writing Competition

The 2015 Constance Baker Motley National Student Writing Competition

ACS's National Student Writing Competition bears Constance Baker Motley's name in honor of her legacy as a civil rights leader, elected official, and the first African-American woman appointed to the federal bench. Papers will be judged on their effective use, analysis and/or expansion of legal scholarship. The judging committee will include federal judges and leading academics.

The student authors of the top three papers will receive special recognition at the ACS National Convention in the summer of 2015 and a cash prize for their work. The winner will be awarded $3,000 and each of the two runners-up will receive $1,000. The top paper will also receive an offer of publication in the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law. 

Examples of topics include but are not limited to: Civil legal aid, civil liberties, education, freedom of speech, LGBT rights, human rights, immigration, labor law, money in politics, privacy, racial equality, religion, the second amendment and voting.

Richard D. Cudahy Writing Competition
on Regulatory and Administrative Law

The Richard D. Cudahy Writing Competition on Regulatory and Administrative Law is open to a wide array of participants. Practicing lawyers, policymakers, academics, and law students all are encouraged to take part. The judging committee will include federal judges and leading academics. A winner will be selected in both the lawyer and student categories. The author of the winning paper in each category will receive a cash prize of $1,500. The winning papers will receive special recognition at the ACS National Convention, on the ACS website, and potentially through other means agreed upon by the authors and ACS.

We encourage participants to view this topic broadly and welcome submissions on a variety of substantive areas.

Thomas Jefferson School of Law announces the First Annual Jameson Crane Ill Disability and the law Writing Competition. The Crane Writing Competition is designed to encourage outstanding student scholarship at the intersection of law and medicine or law and the social sciences that promotes an understanding, furthers the development of legal rights and protections,and improves the lives of those with disabilities.
The Crane Writing Competition is open to currently enrolled law students (J.D., Ll.M., and
J.S.D.), medical students, and doctoral candidates in related fields who attend an accredited graduate program of study in the United States.

Submitted papers may be on any topic relating to disability law including, legal issues arising with respect to employment,government services and programs, public accommodations, education,higher education, housing, and health care.

The winner of the competition will receive a $1,500 cash prize. Two second place winners will each receive a  $1,000 cash  prize. Submissions will be considered for publication in the Thomas Jefferson Law Review.
