2014 Elliot A. Spoon Business Law Writing Competition

The Journal of Business & Securities Law announces the release of the 2014 Elliot A. Spoon Business Law Writing Competition.

AWARDS

Prize: $500 and publication in the MSU College of Law Journal of Business & Securities Law.

Note: The prize money is contingent on receipt of a signed publication contract.

APPLICATION

Eligible students are invited to submit a business or securities law article in law review format to jbsl@law.msu.edu by March 17th, 2014.

Submission Procedure:

If you are a law student at an ABA accredited law school, then submit:
(1) An electronic copy of your article, either as a pdf or as a Word document;
(2) A brief abstract of your article; and
(3) Your curriculum vitae (CV) with complete contact information.

2014 Miami County Bar Association - J. Andrew Fulker Scholarship

The Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Association announces it is currently receiving applications for scholarship grants from the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund was established, in cooperation with the Troy Foundation, as a lasting tribute to Troy Attorney J. Andrew Fulker who died in an auto accident in 1989.

Andy Fulker was a 1971 graduate of Troy High School. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University in 1976 and his Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law in 1979. He was admitted to the practice of law in Ohio in 1979 and became a partner in the Troy law firm of Faust, Harrelson, Fulker & McCarthy. He served as Assistant Municipal Prosecutor for the City of Troy from 1979 to 1982 and as counsel for the Miami County Planning and Zoning Boards from 1979 through 1981. He was a member of the Miami County, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations, the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys.

The scholarship fund is designed to assist deserving law students who are residents of Miami County. Recipients of J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship grants will be selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Association. Grants will be used for law school tuition. To be eligible an applicant must be admitted for full-time attendance at a college of law or law school in a program designed to lead to a Juris Doctor or similar law degree.

The scholarship fund operates as an endowment fund with grants awarded from the income earned on the principal of the fund. Gifts to the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund are eligible for deduction as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes. Contributions may be made payable to the Troy Foundation, designated for the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund, and mailed or delivered to Melissa A. Kleptz, Admin. Director, Troy Foundation, 216 W. Franklin Street, Troy, Ohio 45373.

2014 LSAC Committee Writing Competition

DEADLINE: Submissions must be received by 5:00 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, May 1, 2014.

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) is committed to fostering diversity in law schools and the legal profession.

Studies have shown that students of color, students living with a disability, and LGBTQ students are underrepresented in most law schools. This writing competition is designed to reinvigorate the dialogue about the recruitment and retention strategies that law schools should deploy to yield a more diverse class of graduates that will enter the legal profession.

ELIGIBILITY
Current JD candidates who are in good standing at an accredited LSAC-member law schools.

TOPIC
What techniques, resources and strategies should law schools utilize to recruit and retain students of color and other students who are from groups underrepresented in law schools and the legal profession?

AWARDS
One paper will be selected from each of three (3) qualifying categories of eligible students (1L, 2L, 3L). Each winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and the winning essays will be posted at www.DiscoverLaw.org. In addition one winning paper will be published in the Journal of Legal Education, pending theJournal's final review and approval.

ENTRY PROCEDURES
Submit your entry with a cover page that only contains:

the author's name;
the title of the paper;
mailing address;
law school affiliation;
law school status (1L, 2L or 3L);
a telephone number where the author may easily be reached, and
an e-mail address.

The title on the paper must precisely match the title on the cover page that contains the identifying information described above. To remain anonymous, do not put your name on the actual paper.

Upload entries at DiversityOffice@LSAC.org in PDF or Word format. Only electronic files will be accepted. All papers must be uploaded no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, May 1, 2014. All submissions become the property of LSAC.

Ohio Women’s Bar Foundation Scholarship

The Ohio Women’s Bar Foundation (OWBF) will be granting a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to one law student for the 2014-15 school year.

The deadline for submission is March 7, 2014.

2014 American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The Warren E. Burger Prize
Purpose
The Warren E. Burger Prize is a writing competition designed to encourage outstanding scholarship that "promotes the ideals of excellence, civility, ethics and professionalism within the legal profession," the core mission of the American Inns of Court.
Overview
The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in the competition. Please submit an original, unpublished essay of 10,000 to 20,000 words on a topic of your choice addressing issues of legal excellence, civility, ethics and professionalism.

2014-2015 Akron Bar Foundation Scholarships

The Akron Bar Foundation is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year.

QUALIFICATIONS
The Akron Bar Foundation provides scholarships to law students based on grade point average, affiliation with Summit County, history of community involvement, and financial need.

DEADLINE
Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, April 5, 2014.  Late and/or incomplete applications will not be considered for an award. Qualified applicants will be contacted to arrange for an interview, which will take place at the end of April.

2014 DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship

Apply for the 2014 DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship

DRI announces its annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship  program open to rising (2014-15) second- and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students. The goal of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to two worthy law students from ABA-accredited law schools to promote, in a tangible way, the DRI Diversity Statement of Principle.

All rising second- and third-year female law students are also eligible, regardless of race or ethnicity. Any other rising second- and third-year law students who come from backgrounds that would add to the cause of diversity, regardless of race or gender, are eligible to apply.

To qualify for this scholarship, a candidate must be a full-time student. Evening students also qualify for consideration if they have completed one-third or more of the total credit hours required for a degree by the applicant's law school.

Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to applicants who best meet the following criteria:

Demonstrated academic excellence
Service to the profession
Service to the community
Service to the cause of diversity

DEADLINE
Applications must be received by DRI no later than Monday, March 31, 2014. Scholarship winners will be notified in advance and will be officially announced at the 2014 DRI Diversity for Success Seminar, June 12-13, in Chicago.
