IADC Legal Writing Contest

The International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) has been serving a distinguished membership of corporate and insurance defense attorneys since 1920. 

Its activities benefit the approximately 2,500 invitation-only, peer-reviewed members and their clients as well as the civil justice system and the legal profession. Moreover, the IADC takes a leadership role in many areas of legal reform and professional development.

All J.D. candidates currently enrolled in accredited law schools are eligible to participate in the IADC Legal Writing Contest. Entrants must write on subjects in the fields of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence or other areas of the law of practical concern to lawyers engaged in the defense or management of the defense of civil litigation. The contest is judged by a committee of the IADC.

Winning and honorable mention entries are considered for publication in the IADC's quarterly academic publication, the Defense Counsel Journal. The judges also may award honorable mentions. All entrants receive a one-year subscription to the Defense Counsel Journal.

Law Student Division Board of Governors positions:

• Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary-Treasurer: The offices of Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary-Treasurer are part of the Division's Executive Committee and participate in the Division's overall operations, long-range planning, execution of a legislative agenda, and developing/maintaining ABA membership in the Division. The officers work with the Circuit Governors, Delegates, and Division Liaisons to better serve law student members and work to increase awareness of ABA offerings to law students across the country. Officers are voting members of the ABA Law Student Division Board of Governors which meets four times per year. Nominations must be received via email by 11:59pm on February 1, 2013.

• Division Represenative to the ABA Board of Governor: This officer position serves as a voting member on both the Division’s Board of Governors and the ABA Board of Governors. The representative advocates the Law Student Division positions to the ABA Board of Governors and works for adoption of Division and other initiatives filed with the ABA Board that directly affect law students. Nominations must be received via email by 11:59pm on January 15, 2013.

• Circuit Governor: The (15) circuit governors represent and advocate for law students in their regional circuits. Circuit Governors work with the Division officers, delegates and other ABA leaders to develop and promote ABA programs, offerings, services and initiatives. Circuit Governors also cultivate relationships with other leaders of the legal community in their circuit. Circuit Governors are voting members of the ABA Law Student Division Board of Governors which meets four times per year. Nominations must be received via email by 11:59pm on February 1, 2013.

• Student Editor for Student Lawyer magazine:
  The student editor works with the editor of Student Lawyer magazine and is responsible for authoring copy for Student Lawyer's Division Dialogue section and for reviewing magazine copy on a monthly basis. The student editor serves as a non-voting member of the ABA Law Student Division Board of Governors which meets four times per year. Applications must be received via email by 11:59pm on February 1, 2013.

The following positions are appointed and applications must be received via email by 11:59pm on February 15, 2013.

• Entity Liaisons: The Law Student Division appoints student liaisons to the over 60 ABA specialty practice areas. The Division Liaisons represent the Law Student Division to their appointed ABA specialty practice entity, work with those specialty practice areas to develop law student programs and services, and report to the Division on issues pertaining to law students that arise at entity meetings.

• National Student Directors: One National Student Director is selected to coordinate the Division's VITA program while the other four directors are appointed to work with one of the Division's four competition committees: Arbitration, Client Counseling, Negotiation, and Appellate Advocacy. Travel is required for the competition positions.

Selma Moidel Smith Law Student Writing Competition

The National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) is a national voluntary legal professional organization whose mission is the advancement of women in the legal profession and women’s rights. Since 1899, NAWL has served as an educational forum and active voice for the concerns of women lawyers in this country and abroad.

NAWL continues to support and advance the interests of women in and under the law, and in so doing, supports and advances the social, political, and professional empowerment of women. Through its programs and networks, NAWL provides the tools for women in the profession to advance, prosper and enrich the profession. NAWL has established the annual Selma Moidel Smith Law Student Writing Competition to encourage and reward original law student writing on issues concerning women and the law. The rules for the competition are as follows:

Entrants should submit a paper on an issue concerning women’s rights or the status of women in the law. The most recent winning paper was “All Things Being Equal, Women Lose.

Investigating the Lack of Diversity Among the Recent Appointments to the Iowa Supreme Court” written by Abigail Rury, Michigan State University School of Law.

Essays will be accepted from students enrolled at any law school during the 2012-13 school

year.  The essays must be the law student author’s own work and must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers written by students for coursework or independent study during the Summer, Fall or Spring semesters are eligible for submission. Notwithstanding the foregoing, students may incorporate professorial feedback as part of a course requirement or supervised writing project.

FORMAT: Essays must be double-spaced in 12-point font, Times New Roman font type. All margins must be at least one inch. Entries must not exceed fifteen (15) pages of text, excluding notes, with footnotes placed as endnotes. Citation style should conform to The Bluebook – A Uniform System of Citation. Essays longer than 15 pages of text, excluding notes, or which are not in the required format may not be read.

JUDGING: NAWL Women Lawyers Journal® designees will judge the competition. Essays will be judged based upon content, exhaustiveness of research, originality, writing style, and timeliness.

SUBMISSION AND DEADLINE: Entries must be received by May 1, 2013. Entries received after the deadline will be considered only at the discretion of NAWL. Entries must provide a cover letter providing the title of your essay, school affiliation, email address, phone number and mailing address. Entries must be submitted in the following format: email an electronic version (in Microsoft Word or PDF format) to jmartin@stu.edu.

AWARD: The author of the winning essay will receive a cash prize of $500. NAWL will also publish the winning essay in NAWL’s Women Lawyers Journal in the summer of 2013.

Spring 2013 Recruiting

It's time to begin preparing for the Spring 2013 Recruiting Program, coordinated by the Office of Professional Development (OPD).  Your participation in the program may lead to valuable law clerk experience and potentially to post-graduate employment. 

The spring recruiting program is open to all 1D, 2E, 2D, 3E, 3D, and 4E students.  First-year evening students may participate if switching to the full-time program and with permission of the Director of the Office of Professional Development.

For a list of participating employers, go online to Symplicity and log in.  Proceed to the "OCI" tab and be sure to select "Spring 2013 Recruiting (Session 1)" from the "Session" drop down menu.  Additional employers may register throughout January.

If you do not have a Symplicity username or password, please contact the OPD.  NOTE: Your Symplicity username and password are not the same as your Capital username and password.

MLK Symposium

Program Overview: The Columbus Bar, in partnership with the Managing Partners Diversity Initiative, the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, and Capital University Law School’s Black Law Students Association will host its first Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Civil Rights Symposium on January 30. The program, offering 6.25 hours of continuing legal education credit, will replace the annual King luncheon. Symposium (9:00am-4:45pm): Civil rights remain front and center in our nation today, and the Symposium will explore existing issues, emerging trends, and the laws that impact civil rights in our community. The program will cover education as the new civil rights frontier and examine how Fischer v. Texas has the potential to significantly impact the landscape. Other sessions will focus on citizenship discrimination, hate crimes, and trends in housing discrimination. A distinguished panel will take a close look at SB383 and the changes it brings. 2013 Tannenwald Competition

Named for the late Tax Court Judge Theodore Tannenwald, Jr., and designed to perpetuate his dedication to legal scholarship of the highest quality, the Tannenwald Writing Competition is open to all full- or part-time law school students, undergraduate or graduate.  Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic may be submitted in accordance with the Competition Rules (viewable at www.tannenwald.org). 

Cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500 for the top three papers.
