Latham Diversity Scholars Program

Latham & Watkins is once again pleased to announce the Latham Diversity Scholars Program, which will award a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of six second-year law students. Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars will include a candidate’s: Ability and commitment to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms; Life experiences that have shaped values and that provide a unique perspective, including any obstacles or challenges faced in choosing or pursuing law as a profession; Academic and/or leadership achievements; and Desire to practice in a global law firm environment. Students will be asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by September 26, 2014. Recipients will be announced in early 2015. This scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham. Rather, it is open to all law students in the hope that greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms will benefit the entire profession. The Latham Diversity Scholars Program, among other outreach efforts by Latham’s Diversity Hiring Subcommittee, enhances Latham’s efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer clerks and attorneys. 10th Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair

The 10th Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair (HDLJF) will be held August 1-2, 2014, in Kansas City, Missouri.  Students who are interested in becoming part of Kansas City’s dynamic legal community should strongly consider attending this event.  Students who will be returning to school in August and those graduating in May are eligible to attend the job fair, as employers will be interviewing for both summer and post-graduate positions.

The HDLJF is the result of Kansas City's leading law firms, legal associations, and corporate legal departments coming together to encourage law students to practice law in Kansas City.  The HDLJF is designed to expose law students of diverse backgrounds to both traditional and non-traditional legal employers.  In addition, the event is a great way to learn more about living in this wonderful city.

The HDLJF will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.  It will kick off with an evening Welcome Reception on Friday, August 1st at the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.  The Saturday schedule includes a continental breakfast, interviewing from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and a luncheon at which participants will be greeted and addressed by a special Keynote Speaker.

Please register as soon as possible.  Students who register before May 16th will be entered into a drawing for exciting prizes.  The final deadline for registering is June 14, 2014.

2014 LSAC Committee Writing Competition

DEADLINE: Submissions must be received by 5:00 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, May 1, 2014.

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) is committed to fostering diversity in law schools and the legal profession.

Studies have shown that students of color, students living with a disability, and LGBTQ students are underrepresented in most law schools. This writing competition is designed to reinvigorate the dialogue about the recruitment and retention strategies that law schools should deploy to yield a more diverse class of graduates that will enter the legal profession.

ELIGIBILITY

Current JD candidates who are in good standing at an accredited LSAC-member law schools.

TOPIC

What techniques, resources and strategies should law schools utilize to recruit and retain students of color and other students who are from groups underrepresented in law schools and the legal profession?

AWARDS

One paper will be selected from each of three (3) qualifying categories of eligible students (1L, 2L, 3L). Each winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and the winning essays will be posted at www.DiscoverLaw.org. In addition one winning paper will be published in the Journal of Legal Education, pending theJournal's final review and approval.

ENTRY PROCEDURES

Submit your entry with a cover page that only contains:

the author's name;

the title of the paper;

mailing address;

law school affiliation;

law school status (1L, 2L or 3L);

a telephone number where the author may easily be reached, and

an e-mail address.

The title on the paper must precisely match the title on the cover page that contains the identifying information described above. To remain anonymous, do not put your name on the actual paper.

2014 DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship

Apply for the 2014 DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship

DRI announces its annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship  program open to rising (2014-15) second- and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students. The goal of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to two worthy law students from ABA-accredited law schools to promote, in a tangible way, the DRI Diversity Statement of Principle.

All rising second- and third-year female law students are also eligible, regardless of race or ethnicity. Any other rising second- and third-year law students who come from backgrounds that would add to the cause of diversity, regardless of race or gender, are eligible to apply.

To qualify for this scholarship, a candidate must be a full-time student. Evening students also qualify for consideration if they have completed one-third or more of the total credit hours required for a degree by the applicant's law school.

Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to applicants who best meet the following criteria:

Demonstrated academic excellence

Service to the profession

Service to the community

Service to the cause of diversity

DEADLINE

Applications must be received by DRI no later than Monday, March 31, 2014. Scholarship winners will be notified in advance and will be officially announced at the 2014 DRI Diversity for Success Seminar, June 12-13, in Chicago.

OACTA 2014 Law Student Diversity Scholarships

OACTA's annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship program is open to incoming second and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and Native American students enrolled at Ohio law schools. Incoming second and third-year female law students enrolled at Ohio law schools are also eligible regardless of race or ethnicity. 

Other criteria for the scholarship include:

• Academic achievement in law school;
• Professional interest in civil defense practice; and
• Service to community and to the cause of diversity

SCHOLARSHIPS
Up to two (2) scholarships in the amount of $1,250 each will be awarded to successful applicants. 

TO APPLY

Applicants are required to submit an application, law school transcript and a cover letter addressing the following:  academic, personal and professional accomplishments, and why they should be selected as a recipient of the scholarship.  Applicants may submit up to three letters of recommendation.

The completed application and all other requested material must be received by April 18, 2014.  Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

2nd 2013 Diversity & Inclusion Career Fair - Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association

The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association is pleased to invite eligible law students to participate in the Second 2013 Diversity & Inclusion Career Fair. The Career Fair offers Job Seekers an introduction and opportunity to interact with potential employers.

WHEN: November 26th from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

WHERE: Cleveland State University Student Center Ballroom

ABOUT

The Career Fair will begin with a panel discussion featuring prominent attorneys from a variety of industries and practice areas. After the panel discussion, Job Seekers will begin a speed interviewing session, structured as an informational table-talk event. Job Seekers will have the opportunity to meet and speak with Employers in five minute intervals. After the informational portion has concluded, if the Employer representative finds a Job Seeker he/she would like to interview at greater length, the Employer representative may invite the Job Seeker to return to their table at an appointed time.

COST

The cost to attend will be free for law school students. For all other job seekers, the cost to attend the job fair will be $15.00. Eligible law students must be:

·         Currently enrolled in a juris doctor program and

·         Member of the class of 2014 (current 2Ls/rising 3Ls) or 2013 (current 3Ls)

·         At an Ohio law school or a law school at a historically Black college OR university OR

·         Permanent resident of Cuyahoga County attending law school out of state

REGISTRATION

Before the day of the Job Fair, Job Seekers will register by email. Please send an email to the following address with a resume attached: jobs@clemetrobar.org. The email should contain your name, email address, telephone number, mailing address, year in school or years of legal experience. Each Employer will receive a thumb drive loaded with Job Seeker resumes submitted by November 15, 2013. There will be no onsite resume drop.

LODGING/TRAVEL

The CMBA has negotiated a special rate at the Marriott at Key Center. The special room rate for Employers and Job Seekers is $139.
