Latham &
Watkins is once again pleased to announce the Latham Diversity Scholars
Program, which will award a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of six
second-year law students. Factors considered in
choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars will include a candidate’s:
Students
will be asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and
official or unofficial law school transcript by September 26, 2014.
Recipients will be announced in early 2015.
This
scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of
employment at Latham. Rather, it is open to all law students in the hope that
greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms will benefit the
entire profession. The Latham Diversity Scholars Program, among other
outreach efforts by Latham’s Diversity Hiring Subcommittee, enhances Latham’s
efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer clerks and attorneys.

Rules for the 2014 Brown Award of $10,000 for Excellence in Legal
Writing 2014:
The Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation is pleased to
announce the twenty-first annual Brown Award. The Award is in recognition of
Excellence in Legal Writing in American Law Schools. Any law student currently
enrolled in an accredited law school in the United States seeking a J.D. or
LL.B degree is eligible to receive the Award. This year the stipend for the
winner is $10,000. The 2013 Award was presented to Marissa Doran of Yale
University School of Law for her paper, Information Traps.
SUBMIT
In order to be considered, four copies of a current legal writing
must be submitted to:

The article must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from
a law school faculty member or legal professional other than the author of the
paper. Only one paper may be submitted on behalf of any student and only one
paper may be sponsored by any faculty member or legal professional.The
student’s package must contain a separate sheet containing the title of the
paper; the name, physical address, telephone number, and email address of the
student; and the name, title, physical address, and email address of the
student’s sponsor. There is no page limitation or restriction on the topic
except that the writing must be on a legal subject. The Foundation will appoint
a final judging panel consisting of a law school dean, a federal judge, and a law
school professor. The Foundation will not return any material submitted to the
Foundation.
DEADLINE
The submission must be postmarked no later than June 6, 2014.
NOTIFICATION
The 2014 recipient of the Brown Award will be notified by November

2014 Miami County Bar Association - J. Andrew Fulker Scholarship
The
Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Association announces it is
currently receiving applications for scholarship grants from the J. Andrew
Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund was established, in cooperation with
the Troy Foundation, as a lasting tribute to Troy Attorney J. Andrew Fulker who
died in an auto accident in 1989.
Andy
Fulker was a 1971 graduate of Troy High School. He received a Bachelor’s Degree
from The Ohio State University in 1976 and his Juris Doctor degree from
California Western School of Law in 1979. He was admitted to the practice of
law in Ohio in 1979 and became a partner in the Troy law firm of Faust,
Harrelson, Fulker & McCarthy. He served as Assistant Municipal
Prosecutor for the City of Troy from 1979 to 1982 and as counsel for the Miami
County Planning and Zoning Boards from 1979 through 1981. He was a member of
the Miami County, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations, the Ohio Academy
of Trial Lawyers, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and Ohio Association
of Civil Trial Attorneys.
The
scholarship fund is designed to assist deserving law students who are residents
of Miami County. Recipients of J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship grants
will be selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar
Association. Grants will be used for law school tuition. To be eligible an
applicant must be admitted for full-time attendance at a college of law or law
school in a program designed to lead to a Juris Doctor or similar law degree.
The
scholarship fund operates as an endowment fund with grants awarded from the
income earned on the principal of the fund. Gifts to the J. Andrew Fulker
Memorial Scholarship Fund are eligible for deduction as a charitable
contribution for federal income tax purposes. Contributions may be made payable
to the Troy Foundation, designated for the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial
Scholarship Fund, and mailed or delivered to Melissa A. Kleptz, Admin.

The Akron Bar Foundation is pleased to announce
that it is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2014-2015
academic year.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Akron Bar Foundation provides scholarships to
law students based on grade point average, affiliation with Summit County,
history of community involvement, and financial need.

2014 DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship
Apply
for the 2014 DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship
DRI
announces its annual Law Student
Diversity Scholarship program open to rising (2014-15) second- and
third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students. The
goal of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to two worthy law
students from ABA-accredited law schools to promote, in a tangible way, the DRI
Diversity Statement of Principle.
All
rising second- and third-year female law students are also eligible, regardless
of race or ethnicity. Any other rising second- and third-year law students who
come from backgrounds that would add to the cause of diversity, regardless of
race or gender, are eligible to apply.
To
qualify for this scholarship, a candidate must be a full-time student. Evening
students also qualify for consideration if they have completed one-third or
more of the total credit hours required for a degree by the applicant's law
school.
Two
scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to applicants who
best meet the following criteria:
Demonstrated
academic excellence
Service
to the profession
Service
to the community
Service
to the cause of diversity

Judge Thomas K. Jenkins Scholarship
Minimum Requirements. The scholarship recipient must:
Be a graduate of a high school located in Marion County, Ohio.
Be registered to attend an accredited law school, which normally
maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and normally has a regularly
enrolled body of pupils or students in attendance at the place where its
educational activities are regularly carried on for a course of study that will
prepare them for a career in law.
Have timely prepared and filed the application and accompanying
documents designated by the Marion Community Foundation for this scholarship.
Submit a letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher
and a letter of recommendation from a member of the Marion County community who
is not a relative of the applicant.
Criteria for selection among applicants who meet the minimum
requirements:
Academic Achievement. His or her class ranking, his or
her grade point average, and the relative difficulty of his or her courses will
show the applicant's prior academic achievement.
Academic Potential. The applicant’s academic potential will be
demonstrated by his or her score on the ACT, SAT or LSAT test.
Financial Need. The applicant’s financial need will be considered
and it will be measured by the cost of the education as compared to the
applicant's financial resources.
Community Service and School Citizenship. The applicant’s
commitment to the Marion County community and his or her school will be
demonstrated by the applicant’s service, citizenship, and involvement in
extra-curricular activities.
Special Skills. A brief essay, a possible interview, and the
applicant's academic achievements will demonstrate the applicant's aptitude for
and commitment to excellent communications.
No Prejudice. In making the selection, the committee shall not
consider the applicant’s race, age, religion, sex, national origin, ethnicity
or disabilities.
No Relatives. This scholarship shall not be awarded to applicants
who are close relatives of any of the following: Thomas K. Jenkins, a member of
the Selection Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees of Marion Community
Foundation, or an employee of the Marion Community Foundation. For purposes of
this paragraph, a “close relative” is a spouse, child, stepchild, parent,
grandchild, sibling, first cousin, niece, nephew, aunt, or uncle.
Special Consideration will be given to applicants who will be
attending Ohio Northern University College of Law.

OACTA 2014 Law Student Diversity Scholarships
OACTA's annual Law Student Diversity
Scholarship program is open to incoming second and third-year African American,
Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and Native American students enrolled at Ohio law
schools. Incoming second
and third-year female law students enrolled at Ohio law schools are also
eligible regardless of race or ethnicity.
Other criteria
for the scholarship include:

interest in civil defense practice; and
- Service to
community and to the cause of diversity

Fundamentals of Municipal Bond Law Seminar
The
National Association of Bond Lawyers (NABL) is pleased to announce that it is once
again offering up to five scholarships to law school students to attend its
2014 Fundamentals of Municipal Bond Law Seminar. Located in the District of
Columbia, NABL was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1979, and exists
to promote the integrity of the municipal market by advancing the understanding
of and compliance with the law affecting public finance. NABL pursues this
mission in a number of ways, including, but not limited to, providing several
annual educational programs for its members and others in the law relating to
state and municipal bonds and other obligations.
The
2014 Fundamentals of Municipal Bond Law Seminar is one of these educational
programs. Designed for attorneys, paralegals, government officials and
employees, financial consultants, and other municipal finance professionals and
market participants seeking a basic knowledge of municipal bond law and related
municipal finance issues, it is open to both NABL members and non-members. The
seminar is being held April 30-May 2, 2014 at the Grand Hyatt in Atlanta,
Georgia. The 2014 seminar brochure and details will be available on the NABL

complimentary hotel lodging (checking-in on April 30 and checking out on May 2)
at the Grand Hyatt
(c)
reimbursement of roundtrip airfare (not including any checked baggage fees) at
coach class rates for nonrefundable fares booked no less than 14 days prior to
the departure date to Atlanta, Georgia, and
(d)
reimbursement of ground transportation to and from the scholarship recipient’s
departing airport and to and from the Atlanta airport (limited to the cost of
taxi service)

is eligible to receive the Award.
This
year the stipend for the winner is $10,000. The 2012 Award was presented to
Daniel S. Alterbaum of Yale Law School for his paper entitled, Control Share Acts, Closed-End Funds,
and the Battle for Corporate Control.
Application
process:
In
order to be considered, four copies
of a current legal writing must
be submitted to:

The
article must be accompanied by a letter
of recommendation from a law school faculty member or legal professional other
than the author of the paper. Only one paper may be submitted on behalf
of any student and only one paper may be sponsored by any faculty member or
legal professional.
Due
date:
The
submission must be postmarked no later than June 7, 2013. The student’s package
must contain a separate sheet containing
the title of the paper; the name, physical address, telephone number, and email
address of the student; and the name, title, physical address, and email
address of the student’s sponsor. This year there is no page limitation or
restriction on the topic except that the writing must be on a legal subject.
The Foundation will appoint a final judging panel consisting of a law school
dean, a federal judge, and a law school professor. The Foundation will not
return any material submitted to the Foundation.
Notification
process:
The
2013 recipient of the Brown
Award will be notified by October 31, 2013, and listed with the
other finalists at the website www.brownsims.com/about-brown-sims/affiliations/judge-john-r-brown-award
